Scouting Report

A highly touted draft prospect out of high school, Bell was selected 66th overall by the Rays in the 2024 MLB Draft. He turned down seven-figure money, ultimately electing to attend the University of Kentucky. Safe to say that decision has paid off. Bell is now one of the top collegiate shortstops in the country and a potential first-round pick.

Bell is a switch-hitter with a smooth, uphill path from both sides of the plate. He's more of a contact-oriented hitter from the right side and does most of his slugging damage batting left-handed. Bell is a selective hitter with outstanding pitch selection skills and a strong feel for the strike zone. He draws plenty of walks and knows which pitches he wants to attack early in counts, while also doing a great job of shortening up when behind. Bell does have some holes in his swing, particularly against breaking balls, which may get exposed as he climbs the professional ranks. Some attribute those issues to a shoulder injury he sustained early during the 2026 season, which may require additional work after he hears his name called in July. Even with some of the struggles Bell has faced this year, he's still putting up fantastic numbers in the best conference in the country. There's not much more you could ask for. Bell also has a chance to grow into above-average game power. He's got solid feel for the barrel with plenty of bat speed from both sides of the plate.

Bell's run tool has ticked up since stepping foot on campus, and he now looks like an above-average runner who may be able to swipe 20-plus bags a year. Bell has always been highly regarded for his infield work. At shortstop, he's an extremely athletic defender with great lateral range, smooth actions, and the ability to throw from multiple angles. It's potentially a plus glove, with above-average arm strength that could make him a future impact defender.

Along with the myriad of tools Bell brings to the table, he receives high marks for his baseball IQ and head-down mentality. He's the type of player who makes you sit up a little straighter in your seat when watching him on the field. He carries a quiet confidence that's almost alluring to watch. Bell's profile has a chance to be one of the more well-rounded in this draft class, with plenty more still on the way.
